Akt, also known as PKB, is a critical component of signaling pathways stimulated by various hormones and growth factors, such as insulin. Akt plays an important role in regulating cell metabolism and apoptosis. Akt is activated by phosphorylation at Thr308 by PDK1 and by phosphorylation at Ser473 by mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR).
